4 Workforce Warning Signs Contractors Should Track Earlier

Satirical construction scene with workers, rainbow, and flags reading BOUNDARY, RESISTANCE, VIBRATION; cup says Namaste in these Beams
The world of Construction today.

Listen up, you beautiful degenerates with tool belts and questionable life choices. You’re out here building America’s future while your crew is one bad Tuesday away from turning your jobsite into a support group for people who “just need to feel heard.” I’ve seen empires crumble because nobody caught the warning signs early. These aren’t your HR department’s soft little bullet points. These are the red flags waving like a meth-head trying to use a flare gun under tin foil.

Warning Sign #1: The “Emotional Support Water Bottle” Era

Bro. If your ironworker shows up with a 64-ounce pastel tumbler that says “Namaste in these Beams,” you are already dead. Used to be a man carried a dented metal thermos with coffee that could strip paint. Now they’ve got Stanley cups covered in stickers that say “Mental Health Matters” and “Dog Mom.”

Dog Mom. On a scaffolding. At 7:12 a.m. While you’re trying to pour concrete before the inspector shows up like a vengeful ex.

Next thing you know, little Timmy is refusing to weld because “the machine is giving off negative energy.” Negative energy? That’s 480 volts of “get your ass back to work,” you crystal-wearing cryptid.

Warning Sign #2: They Start Using Therapy Words on the Radio

Nothing makes my popper planet pucker like hearing over the radio: “Hey boss, I’m feeling some resistance to this task and I need to set a boundary with the rebar.”

Boundary. With. The. Rebar.

I once had a guy tell me he couldn’t finish framing because he was “holding space” for his inner child.

My brother in Christ, the only thing you need to hold is a nail gun. Your inner child is the one who wanted to be a Power Ranger — tell him to shut the hell up and install this window before the rain comes.

Warning Sign #3: The Keto Carpenter / CrossFit Conversion

Watch out when your 280-pound concrete guy suddenly drops 40 pounds and starts talking about macros and spandex. One day he’s crushing six Red Bulls and a family-size bag of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos for breakfast.

Next day he’s doing pull-ups on the boom lift and telling everyone he’s “on his villain arc.” Villain arc. On my payroll.

These guys don’t just change diets — they become missionaries.

They’ll corner the new apprentice and whisper, “Bro… you ever heard of carnivore?” while the apprentice is literally trying to not die under a bundle of trusses. Next thing you know your whole crew is arguing about seed oils instead of arguing about whose turn it is to buy beer.

The jobsite becomes a cult. Productivity dies. You will miss the fat, happy, diabetic version of your crew. Trust me.

Warning Sign #4: They Start “Manifesting” Instead of Working

This is the final boss. Your best operator walks up smelling like patchouli and says, “I’m not calling in sick, I’m just aligning my vibration with abundance today.” Abundance. While I’m paying you $48 an hour to sit in your truck “visualizing” a completed project. The only thing you should be visualizing is that bucket of joint compound not finishing itself, you Law of Attraction-larpin’ degenerate.

They’ll send you a voice note at 6:47 a.m. that’s just ocean sounds and “I release the need to show up on time.”

I release the need to keep you employed, Kevin.

Final Boss Move:

If you see three or more of these signs on the same crew, do what the ancient contractors did shut up, get back to work, suck it up or just fire them, and immediately start poaching every 55-year-old angry bastard from the next county and or coyote the real ones back to the crew. You know what I'm talkin' bout Texas, California, Florida - I'm lookin' at you.

Those guys still believe in showing up, shutting up, and making money. They’re extinct in most places, but worth their weight in gold.

Protect your margins. Protect your sanity. And for the love of God, if someone asks for a “quiet quitting” conversation, just hand them the quiet part of their final paycheck.

Now get back to work, you animals. The concrete’s setting.
